Nature’s Details

“Everything made by human hands looks terrible under magnification–crude, rough, and asymmetrical. But in nature every bit of life is lovely. And the more magnification we use, the more details are brought out, perfectly formed, like endless sets of boxes within boxes.”
― Roman Vishniac

Last weekend, I had the chance to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway on a rainy day with close friends and my camera.  Each time I go out to photograph, I look at the conditions that are presented to me and let them dictate what and how I will photograph.

The larger scenes were challenging to photograph because rain kept getting on my lenses.  I ended up creating this image of two well-known trees on the Blue Ridge Parkway from the comfort and warmth of my vehicle.

Weathering the Storm Together

Most of the day, rather than focusing on the larger scenes, I aimed my camera at the details of nature that I find so fascinating.

Rocks always catch my eye.  This was certainly the case as I photographed at Boone Fork Creek.

Colorful Rocks

I also enjoyed photographing the water as it washed over these rocks.

Water and Rocks

When we stopped at Wilson Creek, I focused on the rocks and things growing on the rocks.

As I was focusing on other things, my friends kept talking about seeing a face on a tree.  I thought I would see some vague interpretation of a face.  When I finally did make my way to what they had discovered, I was amazed by the clear face that was on the tree.

The next time you get a chance to take a walk in a natural surrounding, be sure to take in all of the glorious details!
