School’s Out for Summer!

“No more pencils no more books”

-Alice Cooper

Yesterday was the last day of the 2015-2016 school year for my students.  Today is my last day of work before summer vacation.  This is the end of my twenty-ninth year teaching young people in public schools.

Each school year seems to pass more quickly

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

I just returned from one of my favorite weekend photography events.  I have attended Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend each year with the exception of one since I began this wonderful journey of nature photography.  This event takes place in late May or early June each year.

The weekend consists of presentations from talented and gifted nature photographers, opportunities to photograph with old friends and new friends, and participation in a fun contest that showcases the images created on the mountain during the weekend.

The speakers for this year’s event were

“May the warm winds of heaven blow softly upon your house. May the Great Spirit bless all who enter there. May your mocassins make happy tracks in many snows, and may the rainbow always touch your shoulder.”
― American Indian Cherokee Blessing

What a wonderful weekend my husband, Randy, and I had exploring and photographing in the Cherokee, NC area!  There is a great deal to explore in Cherokee.

Since I am always working to grow with my photography, I am currently taking a class.  I wanted to seek out things to photograph in Cherokee to fulfil the requirements of my class.  I was so drawn to the opportunities to photograph

The Arcanum

The Arcanum

One of the best decisions I have ever made for improving my work as a photographer was made in November of 2014.  It was at that time that I decided to join the Arcanum.  The Arcanum is a learning community for creatives.  It uses a Master and Apprentice approach for learning.  When you join the Arcanum, you choose from a variety of subjects to study such as

I had an amazing time Saturday photographing with friends at the Shaw Air Expo, located at  Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.  The hours for the event were 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  I was there just as the gates opened in order to get a great spot for enjoying and photographing the show.

Parking and admission were free for this fabulous event.  There were flight demonstrations, static displays,

Spring is a wonderful time to explore flower photography!  In the Carolinas there seem to be flowers blooming everywhere you look in the spring time.  I like to experiment when photographing flowers.

Last weekend, my friend, Lorraine Shannon, and I went to check out locations

The Difference Fifteen Miles Can Make

The Difference Fifteen Miles Can Make

It was absolutely amazing, this past weekend, to see the difference that fifteen miles can make when photographing a sunrise.  My husband and I decided to drive to the mountains for sunrise early Saturday morning.  In order to get to the destination I had chosen, Roan Mountain, we determined that we would need to wake up at

“Always seeing something, never seeing nothing, being photographer”
― Walter De Mulder

This past weekend, I had a wonderful time exploring the Beaufort, South Carolina area with dear friends and fellow photographers.  There are so many wonderful places and things to photograph while in the Beaufort area.  Among these are church ruins, plantations, shrimp boats, and forts used long ago.

Whenever I am photographing during the day, I often find that my best photography happens
