Caged: In the Aquarium

“An aquarium is just an echo of the ocean.”
― Ben Caldwell

I always wanted to scuba dive.  When I was in my forties, I had the opportunity to take a resort diving course while on vacation.  My experience with the resort course and first dive was

a complete bust.  Since I am an avid swimmer and swim a mile a day each summer, I never dreamed I would have any problem with scuba diving.  However, when it was time to put the things I learned during that crash course into practice, I panicked.  I heard that those who are claustrophobic can have problems with scuba diving.  I hope someday to take a full course for scuba to try again something I have wished to do all of my life.

While working on my personal project, Caged, at the zoo, I wandered into the aquarium one day.  My fascination with the beautiful colors, patterns, and shapes kept me coming back time and time again.

I hope you will enjoy some of the beauty I was able to experience.

Perhaps one day I will attempt a more intensive course for Scuba diving.  I would love to have the opportunity to see this beauty in the wild.

  • Mary, I am so impressed with what you find at the zoo, I decided to go the other day….I came home with ZIP…Nothing…..do you use a special lens, filter or something different to shoot thru the glass and plexiglass. The gorillas put on a wonderful show for me yesterday, but the plexiglass was scratched and dirty and too many reflections. Any suggestions??

    • Hi! I thought I saw you there! I should have investigated further. In the aquarium, I used my 105 macro lens with a polarizer on it. It is dark in there and I didn’t have problems with reflections that you can have. Sometimes, when working shooting through glass, you need to wear dark clothing so your reflection doesn’t show up in the glass. Scratches in the glass can be removed fairly easily in Photoshop. Thank you for the kind words and hope to run into you in the future! The garden area there is very nice, as well!

  • Wow! Beautiful pictures… the colors are awesome and it must be relaxing to watch them swimming.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this blog. Beautiful colors and great subjects for some amazing “creative blurs”.

  • These are fabulous, Mary! Love the colours and details you were able to photograph. I wish we had an aquarium nearby so I could try some photography there. Alas!

  • Your photos are so beautiful Mary! I understand your initial experience with Scuba Diving as I had a similar feeling. I slowly let out the air in my buoyancy compensator and gently went under the water…..and immediately popped up again, feeling quite terrified! I had an amazing instructor which made a huge difference. Once you are a bit more comfortable you begin to lose yourself in all the gorgeous underwater sights there are. I hope you will be able to take a full course. I know your photographs will be amazing!

    • Thank you for your very kind words, Sue! I hope to take the full course sometime soon in order to give it another try! I am so glad you had an instructor who provided a great experience for you!
