“My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport.”
– Steve McCurry
I took a bit of a break from working on my series, Caged. In this series, I am creating images at the Riverbanks Zoo located in Columbia, SC.
If you have ever visited Columbia, SC in the summer, you will know why I did not visit in the summer months. Columbia is one of the hottest places on Earth.
One of the things I enjoy most about being at the zoo is wandering with my camera seeing what catches my eye. There is never-ending subject matter at the zoo.
Before the summer heat arrived, I was drawn to a small pool of water that contained coins. The light dancing across the water changed the scene every second.

I also use the time at the zoo to practice techniques. One day I worked with zoom blurs with several of the animals and scenes encountered at the zoo.

Earlier this week, I joined great friends to photograph at the zoo. Since I was feeling a bit rusty after my long hiatus, I went to a familiar spot: the flamingo area.
Just as comfortable as putting on an old, raggedy pair of jeans, I began photographing the amazingly beautiful birds and their feathers. I will never tire of photographing feathers.

I was excited to be back at the zoo working on this series. I am looking forward to my next trip to wander and explore.
Love all the tiny details… too often overlooked… beautiful… here’s to a 2022 filled with promise and possibilities…
Thank you, Lynn! Best wishes to a magical year for you, as well!
